What to Eat Before and After a Workout: A Simple Nutrition Guide
The food you consume in the period surrounding your workout can significantly impact how you feel during your workout and how efficiently your body responds to post-workout recovery.
You don’t have to follow a complicated diet and use costly supplements to aid your training. For the vast majority of us, then a good place to begin is with well-balanced meals, plenty of water and wholesome nutritious foods.
No matter if you strength train, attend a fitness class, or do a cardio workout, getting to know what to eat prior to and after activity can assist you in establishing new, healthier practices.
Why Pre-Workout Nutrition Matters
Have something to eat before exercising as it will ensure that your body has enough energy to carry you through.
The best meal or snack for you will vary based on your timing and the intensity of your exercise, and what you prefer to eat.
A pre-workout snack that is a good choice should in general contain some carbohydrates to give you energy and some protein. For instance, you could have banana and peanut butter, Greek yogurt with fruit, oatmeal with berries, toast with eggs or smoothie made with fruit and yogurt.
You don't have to eat a big meal right before exercise; if you're going to exercise within a short time after eating, having a light snack is likely to be easier.
What Should You Drink Before a Workout?
Getting ready for activity also involves Hydration.
Ensure you are drinking water regularly and are listening to your thirst signals. When exercising for a prolonged period or if you are perspiring profusely then your hydration requirements may be increased.
If you wait until you are very thirsty to drink water, you will be facing dehydration. It is best to drink water throughout the day, regularly.
What to Eat After a Workout
Followed by exercise. Once you are finished exercising, your body is in need of foods to help it recover.
Protein, carbohydrates, veg or fruit, and healthy fats are a good post-workout meal. Protein is especially beneficial as it supplies your body with amino acids needed for muscle growth and repair.
One example of a quick, easy, healthy meal after a workout might be chicken and rice with sautéed vegetables. Another quick healthy option would be eggs and toast and fruit if you had a workout early in the morning. Greek yogurt and fruit and oats is another easy meal. Another option is to have fish such as salmon with vegetables and potatoes or a chicken and bean bowl with rice and vegetables.
Do You Need Protein Immediately After Exercise?
It's common to hear that protein should be taken in right after the workout.
Yes, nutrition after exercise is essential but don't panic if you are unable to eat straight away after your session.
Rather, concentrate on consuming a sufficient quantity of protein and healthy foods during the course of your entire day. A single meal or snack is not as critical as your overall dietary pattern.
Do Not Forget About Hydration
Water is one of the best ways you can easily support your fitness.
The amount of water you should drink can change depending on how hard and long you work out, the temperature and how much you sweat.
Make sure plenty of water is on hand over the course of the day and rehydrate after training/competing.
Keep Nutrition Simple
Healthy eating doesn't have to be difficult.
Rather than be caught up on crash diets or attempting to adhere to every nutrition fad, construct your meals with wholesome foods you like.
Consistently adding lean proteins, whole grain and other carbohydrate-based foods, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other healthy fats and over 8-10 cups of water to your daily routine can help establish a healthy routine.
